What is the endocannabinoid system?
The Israeli researcher and lecturer Raphael Mechoulam discovered the endocannabinoid system together with American researchers in 1992. The abbreviation endo stands for endogenous and comes from the ancient Greek word endon meaning inside and genos meaning origin. It thus refers to the cannabinoids coming from within or the body's own cannabinoids.
Receptors
Through the receptors CB1 and CB2 to which the cannabinoids of the cannabis plant dock, it was discovered that there are also the body's own cannabinoids for these receptors. The CB1 receptor is predominantly found in nerve cells, especially in the cerebellum, while the CB2 receptor is predominantly found in cells of the immune system.
Endocanabinoid System
There is currently a lot of research going on to understand the influence of the endocanabinoid system. What is certain is that this system has an influence on the immune system and certain control functions in humans. Anxiety disorders, sleep functions, pain perception, appetite control, movement control and also the fight against cancer have to do with the endocannabinoid system. This is also the reason for the manifold fields of application of medical cannabis.
